ac units on wheels

Helping out at Meals on Wheels of Syracuse On June 15th we were glad to help out an organization that  is doing great work in our community, Meals on Wheels located on 300 Burt Street, Syracuse. Mason Kaufman (Executive Director Meals on Wheels of Syracuse) gave us a call because the air conditioning for their kitchen was no longer working. A lot of work happens in that kitchen and it could get quite hot: volunteers and staff (some of them elderly themselves) serve our community over an average of 800 meals a day. We replaced two 18,000 BTU wall units, each capable of cooling 600 square feet. Members of the community contributed money to replace the units, and we donated the labor and discounted the new units. New openings for both had to be cut to accept the newer units. These new units use eco-friendly refrigerant R-410A and will run more efficiently than the old units using R-2, which is no longer being used due to the Montreal Protocol on ozone depletion. We were in and out quickly and complemented by Mr. Kaufman on nice work.
We look forward to helping them in the future, whether they need experts in plumbing, electrical or HVAC. East Cooper Meals on Wheels (MOW) has long been known as a spoke in the food chain for our community’s elderly, home-bound and disabled residents. The delivery of that hot meal five days a week has been a godsend to not only the recipients but their loved ones.
But the volunteer drivers (and the organization as a whole) does so much more than prepare, package and deliver meals. They are the eyes that see what the recipients’ other needs are and the ears that hear their pleas.MOW has a fairly new, but successful program that addresses those needs called the In-Kind program. Currently the big push is for air conditioning units and fans. How do you survive a summer in the Charleston area without air conditioning? Many elderly can’t and won’t.A study from Harvard showed that for every one degree of temperature rise, the threat of death increases significantly for those over 65 who already suffer from health issues.More than two thirds of MOW recipients are elderly women living alone with no one to care for them. Last year, East Cooper Meals on Wheels helped recipient Carrie Mae Brown by installing an A/C unit in her home. Carrie Mae was particularly at risk given her other health challenges, including diabetes and congestive heart failure.
With many of East Cooper Meals on Wheels recipients also struggling with health concerns, she is not alone. And that’s why the organization has started an online campaign to assist residents throughout its seven-county service area. MOW is asking the community to help by purchasing air conditioner units, fans and siding or by volunteering their skills and time to fix safety hazards at recipients’ homes.Sometimes little odd jobs are handled by the volunteers themselves. But other times professional services are needed, and anyone willing to donate those services are encouraged to contact MOW. According to Executive Director George Roberts, everything from pressure washing, to handicap ramp building are taken care of through this program.Pet services, roof jobs and the purchase of new appliances are needs that tend to come up frequently.“So many folks want to age in place, especially in our community, and it takes a lot to keep a house going in our environment. Many are not able to do it on their own, so we’re here to help,” he said.
