Window AC only blows cold air for a few minutes. When I turn my window air conditioner to ON, the compressor turns ON. The AC cools the room for 5 minutes but then the compressor turns off. It still “blows” air but it is not COLD. When this happens and the compressor turns off, I can press the MODE button and change it to FAN ONLY mode. After 1 minute I turn it back to COOLING mode and it comes back on. Is the AC low on refrigerant or could there be a bad thermostat? Question: AC Unit comes on for short time and clicks off and then back on and then off again. We are camped at a commercial campground and it is very hot. The AC unit has been running a lot. I thought maybe it was freezing up and ice was forming on condenser coils as it is also very humid. However, when I left it off for 3 or 4 hours and turned it back on it ran OK for a short period of time and then started the on again off again thing. Robbie: I STRONGLY suggest you have a tech look at your unit. I think you might have a burned, loose connection in your 110V supply that is arking and getting hot. It will run the fan, but when the compressor comes on it will shut everything off and mimic the symptoms you have explained. I suggest you have it checked ASAP to prevent the possibility of damage or fire. Please let me know what you find so I can post the results for our other readers.

Written It could be the compressor relay or capacitor. Try the capacitor first:There are one or two or three capacitors, one goes to the fan, you said the fan turns so that probably isn't the problem. Try replacing the one or two other capacitors that go to a black relay or to the compressor. Modern air conditioners with variable speed technology will run continuously and better match whatever your load conditioners are. A good way to test if your unit is oversized is to provide a false load on your space (potentially open your windows up) and see if the unit will run for a longer period of time before turning off.
