You should be changing the air handlers as well. The systems should match each other for optimum usage. As well as avoiding have to purge the old lines of old refrigerant. I had a 4 ton unit swapped out with new air handler for a 1 zone system for around $6500. This was a Rheem system. Thanks to you and the others for the great advice. I didn't realize that almost the whole system has to be replaced. We believe the units are the originals installed by the builder around 1995. We're in the first category you mention above. We tend to use AC all summer and would have setback thermostats that tend to be in the low 70s when we are in the house and as high as around 80+ when we are not. I don't know if this makes a difference to the cost, but the home has hot air heat (vs. our current baseboard heating which, of course, is entirely separate from AC). Hope this is helpful.
