I didn't realize that almost the whole system has to be replaced. We believe the units are the originals installed by the builder around 1995. We're in the first category you mention above. We tend to use AC all summer and would have setback thermostats that tend to be in the low 70s when we are in the house and as high as around 80+ when we are not. I don't know if this makes a difference to the cost, but the home has hot air heat (vs. our current baseboard heating which, of course, is entirely separate from AC). Hope this is helpful. We mentioned Lennox because we have those units now and they have performed extremely well for nearly 14 years.

However, we're not sure we'll stay in our next home for more than 10. A system from 1995 should be replaced. They only have 15, maybe 20 years of life in them and the new ones are more energy efficient. Compare brands, I am very happy with my new Rheem Originally Posted by nycbrooklyn They are still making R-22 compressors so you can still "fix" your existing unit, for now.
