Above a window is a fine place, provided you have space to run the refrigerant piping and condensate line. Near a corner is okay, but a less central location means there will be a longer time required to circulate air around the room. As a licensed refrigeration person I can say that outdoor installations near the ground are usually more pleasant to service than those that are on a roof. Most modern mini splits are very quiet. As long as the outdoor unit is not directly next to a window, you probably will not be bothered by the noise. Outdoor unit installed above or below the indoor unit does not matter as long as the total lift and length of piping is within the manufacturer specifications.These two townhouses each had 6 wall split systems installed. 
1 x  Samsung 7.0kw AR24FSSSBWK1 and 5 x  2.5kw AR09FSSSBWK1. These units covered the open plan living area, bedrooms and study. As you can see the right and left sides of the house are butted right up against other properties. This made it impossible to locate the out door units at ground level down the sides of the townhouse. Our solution was to mount the units on the pitched roof. Understandably the client did not want to have the outdoor units visible from the front so we moved them all as far back as we could from the street. Installations like this add cost to the project as more materials and labour is required. Unfortunatly in a situation like this, the back area of the house was already taken by the hot water service and water tanks. Another option for this client was to install multi split systems. These units are capable of running mutliple indoor units with only one outdoor unit. It is a great solution for properties that do not have the space or are difficult to install in for what ever reason. 
The client decided not to due to the extra costs involved in installing a multi split system air conditioner. In some cases people will choose to install the outdoor unit up on their roof to keep it out of site. In this installation it was decided because most of the house had decking around it that was used alot for entertaining and the back side of the house didn't have enough space between the house and the fence. It would have restricted access for things like rubbish bins, wheel barrows and generally moving things in and out of the back yard. The pipes go out and straight up into the eaves and through the roof to the air conditioner. The drain was neatly saddled to the side frame of the doors and down under the dacking to a drain. Lifting units up onto pitched roofes like this requires safety harnesses and railings and adds costs to the installation. But as you can see, the finished job is nice and neat and the air conditioner hiden from view from the front of the house.
