I bought my apartment three years ago, and the guy I brought it from left a pretty decent 11,000 BTU LG wall unit in the main room (it's a 400 sq ft studio apartment). Until last week, it worked fine, kept the place cool on energy saver, and I had no complaints. Last week, it completely died. I'd have always preferred that my AC turn my apartment into a meat locker. So, I splurged a bit and purchased this 14,000 BTU dude: I've had issues with it from the start. Initially, the compressor would only run for two minutes before deciding the room was cool and would then turn off and blow just a fan for 15 minutes, followed by two more minutes with the compressor.
It didn't cool the apartment at all. The repair guy came and figured out it needed to be pushed back further into the sleeve (being in there too shallowly was causing it to overheat? dunno.). So, it runs better now; I'm getting more time with the compressor. However, it's really not cooling my apartment half as well as the 11,000 BTU unit. I'm waking up hot, I'm using an extra fan by my bed; it's not what I imagined when I dropped $800+. Does this make any sense? Even on the max settings, the unit can't get my apartment below 75 degrees. The previous unit was able to get it into the 60s pretty easily. This unit claims to fully cool over 600 sq ft. I don't have high ceilings, so I don't know why 400 sq ft is resulting in inefficient cooling. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. I presume the unit may be faulty, and I'm just dreading going a few more days without AC while waiting for a replacement. PS -- In case anyone knows the ropes on outlets. I did upgrade my 110v outlet to 220v to handle this new, "more powerful" unit.
