one ac unit or two

2 AC units and 1 air handler Today I had an hvac system that appears to be 2 ac compressor/condenser units connected to 1 air handler unit. Could I have missed a air handler or this sometimes used. There was a thermostat for the upstairs and one for the downstairs. Need a home inspection in Idaho? listing of Idaho certified home inspectors. Did you see zone controls at equipment? Many thermostats for Zones are identified as such. I'd recommend to isolate handler operation by using individual thermostat to call for condensers individually, then identify the handler being called for... allow the system to cycle down then repeat for second control.

Seeing multiple coils on the distribution portion of the system would be indicative as well. I would say if you don't individually operate the condensers one at a time or have pics... it would be hard to provide information... Is it a situation where you can explain and go back or let them know you don't have an accurate description of the components? Picture from a newer zone control and damper for reference. no water ac unit Back when I had the heating and cooling company, we ran across air handler with two A-coils and two outside condensing units.
window ac unit costThe second A-coil kept freezing up.
how to size ac unit for home I think you have it Sean. Someone needs to take some NACHI classes I guess.... There is no residential application that uses two condensers. Did they look like this? This is one package and one split. Unless they are window units.. I thought you meant 2 compressors .

I think Sean may be right Sorry guys, I am embarassed to say. We asked for the lock box code and went back in. There was a brand new Trane air handler in the attic. Jr. got a little lazy and took the easy way out. Lesson learned is to keep up with your inspectors and make sure the inspection passes the smell test. Thanks again for all your comments and I learned some things from your input I would not have had I not asked the question. Possibly uninsulated ducts to the back bedrooms, but even that I'd think the air who not be "warm". Can you tell us more? Type of system, did it work well in the past, new issue, any work/repairs done recently?? As BayAreaAC said - odd, especially if this is a new thing. You can respond back using the Answer This Question button right below your question, as if you were answering your own question.Assuming this is new, I would guess either a lot of hot air blowing across the ducts at the back of the house (open door on basement or crawlspace and very hot outside temps maybe ?), you have two A/C units and one has failed, or you have a heating pump with separate heating elements front and back of the house, which would be odd but happens - and one of those elements is one - perhaps because back thermostat was bumped up ?Couple of other possibles - you have a two-zone system and the back zone has turned almost all the way off, so airflow is very low and heating up before it gets there; or you have an opening in the duct or inspection plate fell off in the duct to the back rooms that is allowing the airflow to pull in outside hot air with it (by venturi effect), causing dilution of the cold air so it comes out warm.

Ditto to "duct tape" on joints that came off and is letting a lot of dilution air into the back half of the system. Also, if a zoned system using a duct splitter valve or "gate" or "damper", if the gate or damper solenoid fails you could lose most cooling to one zone - ditto if it came loose or spring broke and it moved, or a kid played around with the control arm setting. You said "central air" - but if a mini split system (ductless), with individual fan and evaporator units mounted on the wall in various rooms, if the evaporator flow valve fails in one unit, the fan might work but you would not get cooling, so you would get room temp air circulation from that unit.Ditto with the A/C only ducted systems (commonly round flex ducting) that use fans in the rooms to move the air rather than a central air handler - if the ducting gets separated or torn, can pull in warm air at the damaged place and blow that around.Another distinct possibility - especially if attic-run ducting - two zone system and the return ducting for the back rooms came loose or broke, so you are getting hot outside or attic air for the return air, which the air conditioner cannot then cool enough - especially if return air comes in after rather than the evaporator (though that is poor practice).
