my ac unit is working but not cooling

Carl’s Corner – Auto Repair Help DIAGNOSE – A/C SYSTEM DOESN’T BLOW COLD AIR SYMPTOM SUMMARYThe air conditioning system is not cooling as expected. The air conditioning system may require an extended period of operation to reach the desired output. USUAL CAUSELow refrigerant level is the most likely cause of poor cooling from the air conditioning. If there is no cool air coming from the air conditioning system, an electrical malfunction could be the cause. A defective relay, compressor clutch coil or damaged compressor are all possibilities. DIAGNOSISThe air conditioning system is equipped with safety switches that automatically turn the compressor off when the A/C refrigerant level becomes low. This prevents compressor damage, since the lubricant for the compressor is circulated through the system by the refrigerant. When the pressure switches are activated, power to the compressor is interrupted regardless of the position of the A/C dash switch. Recent regulations have prevented most consumers from doing the repairs.

Special equipment is now used to remove the refrigerant, referred to as “evacuate” prior to opening the refrigerant system. Special leak detectors are used to detect leaks around hoses, fittings, and valves. Once pinpointed, the leak will have to be repaired once the existing refrigerant, if any, is removed. PRECAUTIONS, TIPS, and NOTESThe refrigerant system is under high pressure at all times. During operation, the high pressure side of the refrigerant system can reach pressures of over 275 PSI. Use extreme caution when working around the A/C system. Never disconnect or vent the refrigerant to the atmosphere. Refrigerant can cause extreme frost bite or blindness if it comes in contact with your skin or eyes. Repairs to the A/C system are best left to trained service personnel using the proper test and service equipment. Repairs can be made by the consumer, however, the system should be evacuated using the proper equipment by trained service personnel prior to any component replacement.

After the system is repaired, it will have to be recharged using the same type of equipment. My central AC air conditioner system works very well. The air comes through the vents in the rest of my home. There is one room that the air comes through the vent but it is very weak and not cooling the room.
inside ac unit not coming onOne room is hot and the rest of the house is cool.
central ac unit not turning onThe outside temperature is 90F degrees.
how to build a small ac unitThe AC is on and running. What could be the problem?Be sure the air vent (damper) for that particular room is in the full OPEN position. Someone may have accidentally shut off the air flow or it may have been reduced by closing it halfway. If the vent is fully open, is the HOT room the furthest away from the AC unit?

If so you may have an underpowered AC. You can try closing some air vents in closets, bathrooms, and hallways to see if that lets more airflow into the HOT room. You may have something obstructing the air duct. It may have an area that has collapsed or maybe a connecting joint is leaking. If the duct is leaking air, the cool air may be leaking out and filling the crawl space instead of getting to the HOT room. Get a flashlight and try to look into the air duct through the vent. You can take a vent cover off by removing a few screws. Look into the air duct and make sure there is nothing blocking the air flow. If the duct has dampers you can try moving it to be completely straight with the duct. This may help with getting more air into the HOT room. The inside of your home air ducts may look similar to thisTo check the complete air duct that runs through your home, you should call an AC mechanical repair person. They will come out and put a special camera into the air duct to search for problems such as leaking air or damaged joints.

If you suspect there may be a problem with your main home AC cooling system, you can call an AC service company. When an AC is not working as well as it did, 90% of the time that means it needs to be recharged with coolant. AC (Air Conditioning Repair) companies will usually charge from $100 to $150 US dollars to come out and check and recharge your home AC.If you know of other reasons one room is HOTTER than the rest of the house in the summer months, please leave a comment below.Browse GE Appliances' official support documentation for owners of GE refrigerators, ranges, microwaves, ovens, dishwashers and other GE appliances.Capacitor Failure Symptoms are sometime harder to identify without the right tools and expertise. Capacitors can be found in several different sizes and shapes. There may be one or multiple capacitors included in your ac with regards to the design. While the most popular capacitors are the types found on circuit boards, the ones most associated with air conditioning will be the bigger capacitors that assist start and run your motors.

There are several motors present in an conditioner and heater systems: Compressor Motor Run Capacitor: Here is the most popular capacitor that fails. Most of the time these are duel capacitors, which means that there are 2 capacitors built into one. A duel capacitor will have three terminals on the top where a single capacitor will simply have two terminals on top. Outside Fan Motor Run Capacitor: That is the smaller capacitor found with or part of the Compressor Motor Capacitor. It helps start and run the outside fan that blows air through the outside coils. Indoor Blower Motor Run Capacitor: Similar to the outdoor fan motor capacitor, it is a small, single (two terminals) capacitor that will help start and run the indoor blower motor. Start Capacitor: Some models include an auxiliary start capacitor that helps jump start the motors. Most are found on the compressor. These are less common. Why do capacitors go bad When capacitors go south, they either go out entirely or they decline in strength.

The decline is measured in the “capacitance” units called micro farads. When the capacitors are produced, they are labeled with their specifications capacitance and a range +/- from the design capacitance. This range is the allowable operating range, usually labeled in a percentage range, for the capacitor. If the capacitor starts to fail, the capacitance measured will be outside of the labeled range. Sometimes these are difficult to find any symptoms unless you have the proper tools. Warning, there is a risk of severe shock, so do not try this at home. Diagnosing a bad capacitor If a capacitor goes out completely, or is severely out of its operating range, it may prevent the motor affiliated with it from running completely. If the compressor motor is not working, then the air conditioner will not cool. If the outside fan is not working the compressor may cause problems and will short cycle or cease working. If the indoor fan stops, you’ll find that there is no air blowing through the vents.
