Yet another insane reason to prefer an electric car.ETA: it is important to note that internal combustion engine cars do not have an electrically powered compressor. Instead, they siphon mechanical energy from the rotating crankshaft when the engine is running.  Therefore, any solar power solution must a) be able to actually turn a compressor without the car running and b) produce enough energy to do so. 

Only electric and some hybrids are able to do that.   Most car-sized solar panels do not harvest enough energy to run the compressor or  significantly charge the batteries, as others have posted. There is an option on some Prius that allowed a solar roof of the car to generate enough to run a ventilation fan, but it is not as effective as even simple window shades. The solar panels in the Fiskar Karma were practically useless.Written Written Volkswagen used to offer this on high-spec Volkswagens and Audis using what they called "solar sunroofs.“ As the name suggests, they basically replace the sunroof with a solar panel which could generate just enough electricity to power the fans and circulate the air (no A/C though) when the car is parked in the sun.While the solar sunroof is a neat feature in concept, it really isn't that effective to be honest. From my experience using it before, it does prevent the cabin from getting ridiculously hot, but it does no more than leaving the window or sunroof slightly open / tilted.

If what you want is to stay cool soon after you get in the car, you'd be better off installing cooled seats (even aftermarket).
