installing a window ac unit in the wall

A window mounted air conditioner is meant to be installed through a window and has side extension to fill any gap that that may be left open. A wall mounted air conditioner is made to be installed into a opening that has been cut into a wall. A window unit does not require any major home modifications. All that is needed is the correct window dimension to be known so that the correct size unit can be bought. Window units have the disadvantage of never completely having the area on the sides properly sealed and insulated. Which can leak out the cold air a A/C unit is pumping in. Window units also block the use of the window it is placed in. Wall mounted units have a better seal around them since a hole is cut into a wall for the unit to be placed in. This makes them more efficient to use. Wall units also don’t block a window from being used and look more professional. Window A/C units are much easier to install since no hole needs to be cut into a wall.

They come with brackets that hold them in place and side pieces to fill in any gaps that the unit doesn’t take up. Wall air conditioners require more skill since a hole the size of the unit needs to be cut out of a outside wall. Some window A/C units can be used as wall air conditioners but wall units are not built to be used as window air conditioners. When deciding which type of A/C unit to buy much depends on the skill of the person doing the install. A skilled person will have no problem cutting a section from a wall and installing a wall unit while this may be too much for the average person. Also wall units are a more permanent feature than a window unit. Here are two examples of new AC installs we recently did at the condo Towers at 3000 and 3030 Pembina. We have installed over 50 units in these buildings over the past 6 years, giving Condo owners a much needed upgrade to a 12,000 BTU unit which is much quieter than the originals. Here is an installation we recently did for one of our great property management clients Rancho Realty at one of their rental complexes.

Pictures 1 & 2 are the tenant’s brand new unit Seen above was the tenant’s old unit that was removed. We removed the current small, side vented AC sleeve that only fit a 6,000 BTU window unit and replaced it with a correct universal sized through wall sleeve which can house up to a 12,000 BTU AC.

air handling unit not runningCall your local HC rep if it’s time to replace your old, worn out and unsightly through-the-wall style air conditioner. 12,000 BTU Thru-Wall AC Prior to this 12,000 BTU Thru-Wall AC, there was an air conditioner sleeve to fit a 6,000 BTU window AC.

That will hardly cool 200 sq ft. With this brand new unit installed in the living room of 493 Thompson Dr., it can help cool up to 650 sq ft! Existing sleeve was removed for a universal sized thru-wall sleeve to be installed along with the new air conditioning unit. It is a common occurrence in condos and apartments with through-the-wall style A/C sleeves to mistakenly replace old/broken units with window air conditioners instead of the proper thru-wall A/C required. One of the many problems that results from this is that window A/Cs are narrower than thru-wall A/Cs and the existing gap not only looks unprofessional, it creates opportunities for unwanted messes. Such as the bird’s nest in the unit pictured below. Below is a picture of the same wall-sleeve, but with an A/C that H&C provided which properly fills the existing opening. There are several other reason not to put a window A/C into a wall-sleeve, including: improper ventilation voided warranty unnecessary extra labour unprofessional and unsightly Call H&C Air Conditioning in Winnipeg, Regina & Saskatoon and get it done right the first time!
