174 posts, read 212,606 times I have purchased a home and had an A/C technician do a service maintenance on my central air unit and tell me what type of unit I have, etc. I have a UV filter, allergy filter, air purifier on my unit. There is also an intake air filter. When he came today to inspect the unit, he said I did not need an intake air filter cause the reusable washable allergy filter is all I needed. And to have too many filters would not cool the house properly. So do I need that intake filter with allergy filter, or can I run my unit without the intake filter and the allergy filter will be enough? Yes, you can choke an A/C air handler down to nothing with filters. Every filter is going to slow the air movement thru it. The fiberglas cheapies are great at air flow but still effect the amount of flow some.

They do not filter as well as a much finer media like your allergy filter. Your allergy filter though will slow air flow considerably because of the fine media. Any additinal filters are only going to slow the air flow down more. Your A/C unit may be running at only 75% efficiency because of the restricted air flow thru the coils from the filters. I'd be more inclined to respect the A/C techs advise and eliminate the prefilter considering he evaluated the unit and it was a concern to him.
