RADical Days: Free admission to Pittsburgh attractions this weekend An air-handling unit serving three patient care units at VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System’s University Drive location failed Friday, making cool airflow unavailable to the units. A spokeswoman for the VA said patient care staff transferred 38 affected inpatients to other beds within the medical center and moved two other inpatients to other local hospitals within the last 16 hours.The air-handling unit was repaired Saturday afternoon and normal airflow was restored to the patient care units. Environmental management teams began cleaning and sanitizing the affected rooms.Three of the 38 inpatients affected were discharged Saturday, and patient care teams began transferring the remaining 35 patients back to the units that had been out of service.Families of patients are being notified and the VA expects all patients to be transferred back or discharged, if appropriate.The medical center is continuing to divert some medical and surgical admissions to local hospitals and other VA medical centers until Monday morning.
