Let the hack commence! Mara's brother pitched in by assembling the bookcase and cutting out the back of cabinet where the AC unit would fit. Mara herself cut and painted a piece of wood to fit the upper portion of the cabinet. Four door hinges and two knobs later, she had a cabinet instead of a shelf. Now, she can open it up during the warm summer months when it's needed. Or she can keep that puppy closed in the winter. Either way it solved her problem and made for some cute bonus storage to boot!
