Water cooler horror stories abound with nightmarish tales of exorbitant repair bills and shop delays due to heavy demand for this type of service when the mercury is high. But are there any alternatives to overheating your credit card when it comes to keeping your ride cool? First remember that the overwhelming majority of vehicle AC failures are caused by a leak of refrigerant gas. These systems have a low-pressure sensor and when the gas drops below a preset level it won’t allow the compressor to run. If you want to know for sure, you can do your own preliminary diagnosis. Locate the AC compressor mounted on the drive-belt end of the engine; it’s usually just a little larger than the alternator and will have two aluminum pipes connected to it, as well as a two-wire power supply for the electric clutch.
This clutch is located on the outside of the compressor’s pulley and it’s a black metal disc. With hands clear, and your eye on the clutch plate, have someone start the engine and turn the AC onto full cold. The clutch plate should click in and rotate at the same speed as the compressor’s pulley and belt. If it does so and then immediately cycles off and on again, it’s due to a lack of gas. If it doesn’t engage or turn at all, then it’s not getting an electrical signal and you may have more than one problem. If your vehicle does have a gas leak, the most common source is the AC condenser – a radiator-type unit mounted in front of the engine’s coolant rad. It’s out in the open and prone to stone or road debris impacts. As the system’s gas also contains a small amount of lubricant for the compressor, there will often be a small oil stain at the source of a leak. When a tech is requested to perform a service to an inoperative AC unit, the first thing that’s done is a vacuum test of the system to confirm the presence of a leak.
Techs are prohibited by provincial environmental legislation from recharging a leaking AC unit. First, it’s a waste of money because the new gas will quickly leak out and, secondly, even though the new recipe for this gas is friendlier to the air we breathe than the old style, it’s still harmful to our atmosphere. Good AC techs will never simply go on their first observation when checking for a leak because there are multiple seals, lines, and exchange units that can cause problems. They’ll always insert a detection dye into the system and instruct their customer to come back after a day or so of driving when they can then use a black-light to find all the leaks in the system. When you recover from the repair estimate, ask your shop if aftermarket alternatives are available. Often they can be considerably less expensive. If your vehicle has a separate rear AC system (very common on minivans) and the undercarriage lines or the rear evaporator has failed, consider eliminating that system by having the tech cut those lines out and creating a sealed loop just off the front system.
Not all shops are equipped to do this but it can save hundreds of dollars. The same repair process can be used to section in a piece of aluminum tubing instead of replacing the entire line. Avoid DIY reseal/repair kits like the plague. First, they seldom work. Secondly, most of them use a butane derivative for the refrigerant gas and, like butane, it’s highly flammable. I don’t know about you but I’d rather not have an explosive gas circulating through a very vulnerable collision-prone part like an AC condenser. And, finally, if your reseal adventure doesn’t work and you end up taking the chariot into a shop, the sealant chemical in those kits can gum up the works on some very expensive recharging station equipment (guess who pays for that?). If the repair budget is drained and you can’t justify repairing your AC leaks, make sure the compressor clutch electrical circuit is disconnected. If the compressor runs out of oil, it can seize and leave you on the side of the road if its drive-belt happens to power other things such as the alternator.
