Ductless air conditioning consists of an indoor unit and outdoor unit that provides heating or cooling for each room. Instead of a central unit setting the temperature for the entire house, each pair of units in a ductless system works independently for individualized temperature control in each room. If the building does not already have central air conditioning, a ductless system eliminates the disruptive process of installing ducts into the attic or walls and the ongoing need to maintain them to ensure there are no leaks. They are not designed to pump air over long distances as with central air conditioning units. Run the Refrigerant Line Running the refrigerant line is the next step. It connects the indoor and outdoor units and requires drilling a small hole in the wall about three inches wide. The power cables and condensation drain are run through this hole. Once the refrigerant line is connected to each unit, it should be pressure tested to ensure there are no leaks before refrigerant is added. In a split system with multiple indoor units per outdoor unit, there is a set of lines for each indoor unit. Install the Indoor Unit There are two options for installing indoor units. The most common option is a wall unit. These are placed high on the wall and contain a fan and directional fins to distribute the air throughout the room.
