air conditioner window unit invented

Quirky has partnered with GE to bring New Yorkers a seriously cool new air conditioner. There’s the cool factor, and the cold factor. Luckily, Aros has both. The much buzzed-about air conditioning unit from Quirky – which was invented by a former U.S. Department of Energy flack – is one cool window unit. Quirky has partnered with Uber for to-your-doorstep delivery service in New York City, a downright luxury when you think of the injustice of slogging a window unit from Home Depot on a day when there’s 99% humidity. And they’ve embraced the kitsch, with Quirky employees donning Hawaiian-print shirts and bussing around in a converted 1970s ice cream truck. And then, there’s the Aros unit itself. Co-designed by Garthen Leslie in a multimillion-dollar partnership with GE, this is a sleek, sexy unit for the smartphone generation. Rather than ugly horizontal grille that is prone to collect the various dust mites lurking around the city, Aros’ front is a pleasing array of dots, with the cold air blowing upwards instead of outwards.

And with 8,000 BTU, they mean business. My Lilliputian living room takes about 3 to 5 minutes to cool off entirely to a pleasant 70 degrees, ridding the room of all mugginess and humidity synonymous with summer in the city. With the great power comes a fairly loud noise. It was difficult to hold a normal conversation with Aros running on high. There’s no remote with Aros – not yet, anyways. That’s where the “smart” in smart air conditioner comes in. Users can download the Wink app for free and synch it with Aros, which will connect to your WiFi system. Remotes, we’re told, are coming with next year’s models, of which there will be more to choose from. With Wink, you can remotely control the settings – fan, economy and cool, on low, medium or high – and much more. The app also uses GPS to anticipate when you’ll be home and wanting your apartment cool and comfortable. But for those on a budget, Aros will track electricity usage and keep your ConEd bills in check.

My favorite thing about Aros is the aesthetic. It is sleek, playful and thoughtful, a perfect thing from a company known for innovative tech tchotchkes. Another divergence from conventional units? Aros tells the temperature using a blue LED control display. The actual temperature in Fahrenheit is shown when you press a command, and fades back into white when shut off. If this unit were in my bedroom, however, I’m sure I would want a dimming factor for the light, which only shines in a very, bright, vivid blue. At a price point of $300, Aros is a bit steep for New Yorkers simply hoping for a breezy respite from all of summer’s hot weather, and at 8,000 BTUs it’s likely too big for many of their apartments. But Quirky reps assure us that the investment will even out within a year based on the amount of energy the unit saves in the long run. Uber users can enter the promotion UBERCOOL in the app to unlock the UberCOOL option over the June 14 weekend. Quirky workers will deliver the unit, but you have to do the installation yourself.

The $300 charge includes delivery, and will be charged to the card on file for the Uber account.
