"Because of the systematic replacements that we're doing, we're (renovating) a dorm that was built in the 1960s, when you had one (electrical) outlet in a room and now they have laptops and laser printers," Densic said.

We're making the spaces suitable for those students. "Surprisingly the air conditioning is a major component of that. Kids bring in a lot of heat-generating equipment," he added. "We just didn't have that much electrical capacity in the building prior to this. We've not only upgraded the electrical in the building, we've brought new power to the building. We've added additional power outlets and additional data and the enhanced Wi-Fi." Robert Densic speaks about EMU's Wise Hall When students return to Wise Hall for the beginning of the fall semester, they'll have dorms equipped with individual heating and cooling units and increased Wi-Fi capacity, as well as new furniture and windows and remodeled bathrooms in the dorms' first renovation since it opened in 1963. Phases 1-3 of a four-phase renovation of Wise Hall are expected to be completed in the coming days, providing a total of $8.4 million in improvements in the $11.5 million project for the hall, which houses around 280 students.

The renovation of Wise Hall is part of an ongoing $30 million commitment to residential facility improvements since 2008, EMU Director of Facilities, Planning and Construction Scott Storrar said. "The students are going to have a new experience over there," Storrar said. "The rooms are going to be redone with new furniture and cooling units. That's what we really tried to achieve for this four-stage project. "What we've done going back to 2008 is put over $30 million into our residence facilities – dorms and some housing as well," he added. "This one is a little unique, because we're getting into the infrastructure with electrical and the cooling." The final phase of the renovation will pick back up next spring with the installation of a new elevator, renovations of the common areas and lobby as well as a roof replacement, which should be completed by the beginning of next fall, Storrar said. Renovations like those taking place at Wise Hall are designed to create a better experience for students, who have more off-campus living options than ever, EMU Vice President for Communications Walter Kraft said.
