Usually these portable ACs are on wheels and can be rolled about. My wife is afraid she can't take the heat, so I told her to stay out of the kitchen, but that didn't go over well. I think the problem is more in line with the electric power costs on Kauai that air conditioning entails. If the owner has not figured it into their rental costs--they could be socked with a big bill following your visit. What a good question. I had a guest of mine stay on the South side the first week and they were so hot they went to Costco and bought a big fan. Not the type you are talking about but a portable one. They said it was worth it and they told the owners they were doing it and would leave it or give it away to another "hot" couple. Just remember you might not need a/c. Hawaiian AC is a long cold shower, then blow drying in front of a huge fan. The rental agency we use has often offered to lend us more fans if the cross breeze was not enough to cool us down. I've never taken them up on the offer, though. You might check with the folks you rented your place from. Also, if A/C is really that important, there are units that have A/C.
