The Indian AC market is estimated at an annual 7,500 crore with 3.2 million units sold each year. Neither Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd nor Panasonic India Pvt. Ltd sells window ACs. The first stopped doing so last year and the second didn’t offer them after its 2006 relaunch in India. “We saw the Indian market following global trends with consumer preference moving towards split ACs,” said Mahesh Krishnan, vice-president, consumer electronics, Samsung India. “We have been fuelling this trend by offering a strong product portfolio in terms of split ACs.” There is no innovation possible in window units, said Suresh Kumar Bandi, deputy manager director, home appliances, Panasonic India, who sees the entire market shifting to split units, except for replacements. Given the slackening demand for window units, it doesn’t make sense for Panasonic to sell them, he said. “Split ACs can be installed on any wall in your house, whereas window ACs need casement windows, and most new residential set-ups do not have the provision,” said Saurabh Baisakhia, business head (ACs) at LG Electronics India Pvt. Ltd, which has cut the production of window ACs by 10% this year.
