The company's GE Zoneline through-the-wall heating and air-conditioning unit — mainly used in the hotel and motel industry — will start full production in the first quarter of 2016, according to a news release. GE Zoneline PTAC models were made at Appliance Park from 1961 until 1987, when manufacture of the product was outsourced overseas, the release said. The new Zoneline units will be manufactured at Appliance Park in the same building as the GeoSpring hybrid water heaters. It will be the second new product platform brought to Appliance Park in nearly 50 years (the water heater being the first). General Electric Co. (NYSE: GE) is investing about $40 million to bring the air-conditioner production here. The $40 million is a part of a $250 million overall investment we told you about in April.

The announcement also will create more jobs at Appliance Park. About 100 workers will be on the production line, and about 75 of those jobs will be newly created positions. The new Zoneline is engineered to be more reliable, quiet, energy-efficient, and easier to install and maintain — all features that are critical to hotel/motel customers, the release said. Hospitality industry data show that when guests are not pleased with the noise or temperature of their room, two-thirds are not very likely to return to the hotel and one-third are not very likely to recommend a hotel. "The existing Zoneline products have served our customers well, but as the hotel/motel industry becomes increasingly more competitive, customers are looking for every advantage to ensure their guests have the best experience possible," Liz VerSchure, product general manager for consumer comfort, said in the release. "We have taken the most important aspects of heating and cooling the traveler's room into account with our new design."

GE also makes washers, dryers, dishwashers and other appliances in Louisville. It's one of the area's largest employers, with about 6,000 full-time equivalent workers. This is an interesting time for GE to move production of this product, considering it soon could be acquired for $3.3 billion by AB Electrolux.
