Most people do not realize that their central unit has electric strips to produce heat when the heat pump cannot extract heat from very cold and dry air. My solution to this was to purchase an oil filled radiator type heater like this DeLonghi TRD0715T Safeheat 1500W Portable Oil-Filled Radiator with Vertical Thermal Tunnels (this one is exceptional and I have bought about 4 for myself, friends and work) which I only have to use when the temps are very low.
